Ian Nepomniachtchi a été le premier à terminer sa partie dans cette ronde et il n’a pas trop poussé pour essayer de remporter la partie contre Teimour Radjabov. Il était déjà au courant que Fabiano Caruana, son plus proche concurrent au classement, était dans une position perdante contre Jan-Krzysztof Duda. En effet le Grand-Maître américain a choisi une ligne d’ouverture très risquée et il était déjà en grande difficulté au 17eme coup. Son adversaire est parvenu à convertir la position en un beau gain.
En plus de voir l’écart se creuser avec le leader, Caruana a été rejoint à seconde place par Hikaru Nakamura et Liren Ding. Dans une position plutôt égale contre Richard Rapport, Ding a profité d’une erreur de son adversaire au 42eme coup pour s’imposer. Nakamura a profité du jeu vraiment très léger d’un jeune joueur français Alireza Firoujza.
La bataille pour la première place semble déjà jouée mais pour la seconde tout est encore possible. Et cela pourrait avoir son importance si Magnus Carlsen décide de ne pas défendre son titre contre Ian Nepomniachtchi. Ce qui est quand même peu probable.
